Chapter 27

Spring 2036 - Consortium Biotech HQ

Trask leapt to her feet at the news that Walter might know where to find one of her lost CF.

Bayard laid his head on his paws. He liked hearing that Trask’s CF had escaped. It used to give him hope.

“Laylea.” Walter read the name off his illegible paper.

Bayard’s head snapped up, his ears flipped to face the conversation, and his tail thwacked the side of the filing cabinet once before he got it under control.

Laylea had been his sister’s name. Could his sister still be alive? He hadn’t thought about his litter mates in ages.

Trask peered at the picture. “Subject 284 is carrying a little fawn colored dog ... that looks an awful lot like Bayard.”

Bayard didn’t have time to look away before both scientists looked around for him. They turned back to the screen after they spotted him. Neither grabbed the leash or shooed him into his crate.

He tried to catch up with the conversation. Walter was having trouble focusing and not in his usual air-headed way. He was confounded, unable to keep his mind on the dog. He kept repeating “I know nothing,” and while that usually annoyed Trask, neither one of them seemed to notice he was doing it.

They were talking about the picture of the three CF: Gamma, Theta, and 284. The numbered CF came after the esteemed Dr. Coogan had died, so 284 was from a later batch of soldiers. One of the men was holding a fawn-colored dog. The dog belonged to Theta who was known as Clark Hillen and was married to a vet.

Walter threw Trask’s pencil cup at the window. There weren’t many pencils left in the cup, but two of them still managed to hit Bayard.

“I went to their home.” Walter punched a finger at the delicate paper. “It says right here I went to their home.”

They listened to a recording of two guys talking. Bayard didn’t understand what they were talking about, but Walter didn’t care about anything except the dog. From that one, thirty-second clip, he decided that Theta had Bayard’s sister. And that she was what he was looking for.

“She’s not a dud like you. She’s smart, and he knows it. Theta has my daughter.”

For once, Trask was on the same page as Walter. She slipped into her jacket and started stacking folders in her briefcase. “Let’s go get them.”

“Should we ask the Director for his advice?” Walter asked with a sneer.

Trask paused in her packing. “No. We’ll report to the all-powerful when we have the lost subjects in hand.”

They discussed who to bring, and Trask texted out the orders. Bayard’s stomach churned with competing emotions. He wanted to see his sister. He didn’t want her to see him like this. He wanted to know what had happened to Josh and Milo and even Rhemy who was never nice to him. He wanted to know why Mama had abandoned him.

The thought that made his heart pump and his tail stiffen was the
